Nishitani!

Also went to some inaka town called Nishitani for the matsuri (big shinto festival) and probably had one of the coolest days ever.

Explored a beautiful town, got thirsty and a beer magically appeared in front of me, made omlette rice and cut my thumb because my culinary skills are not sharp, made fancy Japanese papercraft, got serenaded by a shakuhachi duet (they rocked), and watched one of the most interesting parades I've ever seen.

There were huge, multiple hundred pound floats, manned by all the men of the town. There were 4 children beating the drums inside the float as they carried it on two giant logs, and they kept dropping it on themselves, and then hoisting it back up and then lifting it above their heads.

They carried it all around the town, and then back to the shrine, and then they finally set it down. There were 5 floats, and 2 were carried by children. It was a fantastic show. When they all parked in front of the shrine, the priest came out, and the Shrine Maidens danced.

The Shrine Maidens were reenacting a battle, and actually danced with bared steel. It was rather terrifying, but still beautiful.

Then the priest threw rock hard mochi at us and it was awesome.

I caught most of them with my face, but every once in a while i caught them with my hands.

And im tired of fighting the formatting of Google Blogs, so here's a line of photos.

Until the next one!

Sickness and Swordsmanship

So this week i definitely got sick from working too late and sleeping too little. Really kinda bad. 2 days of me barely being able to function, and then a few more coughing and hacking. Note to self, don't get run down abroad! It's way too hard to get better when the doctors cost an arm and a leg!

Somehow managed to recover just enough to go to Iaido with my good friend Ian. Probably one of the coolest things I've done since coming to Japan. Iaido is mainly a working the forms exercise in swordsmanship, and it feels like being at a gun range... with sharp things instead of bullets. Terrifying and really hard on the knees, but awesome. I think I'll be going back for more!

Also found my first liquor vending machine... Didn't buy anything from it though. No regrets there! Sake isnt quite my thing! Can't wait for my next adventure! :)

Week of Work and Parties

Ok so the past week and a half has been rough. Spent some time taking classes on Beer Stratification, instructed by Craig Baylis, (yes i am taking classes in the bar, Clint!) in my favorite Toriki!

After that, we went to Takarazuka to party on the river. Made tons of friends, and gave my camera to the professional photographer, Miss Erika K (the lovely lady in the pink), and she snapped photos as we all drank. The party went on pretty late, and this time i didnt take the wrong train home!

Also if you look up, you'll see pictures of gas station sushi, or as i like to call it, a japanese club sandwich! Much bigger than any sushi i've ever had!

Also went on an epic quest to find the Capoeira group on campus, but the website was wrong, so we missed them.

Going on Monday to find them for real; on to the next one!
